Implementing Effective Policies to combat Alcohol related harm: Barriers and Opportunities.

Here is the breakdown of the activities that happened on the first day (Thursday 28th November 2024) of the 2024 Uganda Alcohol Policy Conference, held at Makerere University School of Public Health Auditorium:

 

Under the thematic area of “Implementing Effective Policies to combat Alcohol related harm: Barriers and Opportunities”, registration of conference delegates was the first activity of the day.

 

We had plenary session one of the Conference titled, “Alcohol Burden and Holistic Approaches and    policies for Development in Uganda” in the Auditorium.

 

Welcome remarks came in from the Conference Chairperson Dr. Makumbi Gerald and remarks came in from Bishop Lugoloobi from the Inter Religious Council of Uganda.

 

The Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health: Implications for Uganda was shared with us online by Mr. Dag Rekve (World Health Organisation, Geneva).

 

The STEPS Survey on Alcohol Harm in Uganda was also shared with us at the Conference.

Dr. Kenneth Kalani from the Ministry of Health presented on “Implementing policies to curb alcohol harm in Uganda – Gains, Losses and prospects”.

 

The Nnabagereka Development Foundation from Buganda Kingdom shared on “Harnessing the success of Ekisaakaate kya Nnabagereka – a transformative model for youth empowerment and alcohol prevention in Uganda” followed by a question-and-answer session.

 

Tea break led us into plenary session two that talked about the Uganda Alcohol Control Bill in the Auditorium.

Professor Nazarius Mbona from the Makerere University School of Public Health presented online on why the 2024 Uganda Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill “has to get back on the table”.

A panel discussion was held on the Uganda Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill with members from Government, civil society members, the Police force et cetera.

 

 

Plenary session three to do with the opening ceremony of the Conference kicked off with remarks from our Chairperson, Ms. Namukasa Juliet.

Remarks from the official partner were made by Dr. Kasule Hafisa from the World Health Organization.

Remarks from the Ministry of Health came in from Dr. Lukwata Hafsa.

 

Lunch was the next activity of the day, and it led us into 4 parallel sessions.

There were 4 presentations done in each of the 4 parallel sessions.
