We took part in the 4th Uganda National Mental Health Conference this year. It lasted three days from 27th May to the 29th of May and took part at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
"Building Resilient Communities: The Future of Mental Health in Uganda", was the theme of the conference.
A lot was shared amongst all participants of the conference but the most outstanding to us were:
1. We need to integrate more mental health services in schools - Ministry of Education and Sports.
2. We need to broaden the national database on information related to mental health - practitioners, information gaps et cetera.
3. Alcohol-related harm remains a huge problem in the country and it's for everyone's benefit that we all put our weight behind the current National Alcohol Control Policy - which in turns gets us closer to a fully-fledged law on alcohol.
4. Community-based efforts must be commended and championed since majority of the mental health challenges faced in the country are experienced there, firsthand.
We look forward to future engagements with you all, to improve the mental health of all Ugandans.
