Drafting our submission for the Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill 2023 as part of civil society.

In case you missed it, the Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill of 2023 was introduced on the floor of Parliament on the 14th of November 2023, for it’s first reading.

 

The Bill was referred to the Parliamentary committees of Health and Trade.

 

So, as part of the civil society, we met at Kolping Hotel to draft our submission for this Bill (with the background of the National Alcohol Control Policy of 2019), that we shall elaborate on when we interface with the legislators at a later date.

 

A few of us did record and shall be recording what they think about the Alcoholics Drinks Control Bill 2023 and it's significance to the lives of Ugandans. 

They include our Executive Secretary, Prudence Aturinde who spoke of how unproductivity out of consuming alcohol all day amongst our people, has left many of them exposed to alcohol harm. 

 

 

 

 

 

We also had our National Coordinator, Nassanga Margaret shed some light on 3 reasons why she believes in the 2023 Alcoholics Drinks Control Bill.

 

 

 

 

Mr. Baguma Richard voiced his concern as to why we have not, as a country passed this law, since we are in the leading countries that consume alcohol, despite it's known challenges it brings with it.

 

 

 

 

Chris Kwizera from Uganda Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance expressed his concern about alcohol being a major cause of non-communicable diseases and injury in Uganda today and why we need to have a proper system of regulation with us.

 

 

 

 

Our Projects Officer, Namwero Daphine elaborated on why it is necessary to restrict and regulate access to alcohol in Uganda. 

 

 

 

Dr. Kulthum Nabunya based at Kampala Capital City Authority spoke directly to parents and care-givers about their actions on alcohol consumption.

Salongo Enoch Kabuye from Acts Fund had a very important and timely message for us all on this same issue. 

 

 

Chairperson Lukwago Francis of Muyenje village says that the Alcoholics Drinks Control Bill 2023 should be passed as soonest as possible. So many youths' lives depend on it!
