EVENT

Press Conference on the Petition on the Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill rejection by the Parliament of Uganda.

Date

THEME
Petition on the Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill rejection by the Parliament of Uganda.

We did learn with shock and consternation of the Parliamentary Committee on Health and Trade's disdaining report rejecting the Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill - number 24 of 2023, on the 13th day of August 2024.

It was against this background that we and other like-minded institutions (Uganda Girl Guides Association, Uganda Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance, Makerere School of Public Health) as well as members from institutions in other countries that we work with (Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania and Sweden) - who had just been participating in the 2024 IOGT NTO Movement Annual Partners Meeting, came up and held a press conference today, to petition the Honourable Speaker of Parliament on the rejection of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill, to re-consider their overall position.

We submit that the Members of Parliament should have considered the facts and directions set out in Uganda's National Alcohol Control Policy of 2019, the Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill, the different information memoranda presented to the committee by various experts as well as the best practices in the sector in different countries before considering and undertaking such disdain dismissal of the Bill.
