As part of the World Health Organisation SAFER initiative to reduce alcohol-related harm in Uganda, we (on the 21st of June 2023), together with the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation convened in Jinja district with their district leadership for a workshop meant to strengthen their response on this issue.
The District leadership that was part of this workshop included the area Member of Parliament, Mayor of Jinja, Town Clerk, Deputy Mayors, District Commercial Officer, In-Charge Child and Family Protection Unit sitting in for the District Police Commander, Local Council Mobilisers among others.
The “SAFER” phrase stands as an acronym for;
S - Strengthen restrictions on alcohol availability.
A - Advance and enforce drink driving countermeasures.
F - Facilitate access to screening, brief interventions and treatment.
E - Enforce bans or comprehensive restrictions on alcohol advertising, sponsorship, and promotion.
R - Raise prices on alcohol through excise taxes and pricing policies.
We look forward to updating you on this development in the future.
