Background

Founded in 2011, the Uganda Alcohol Policy Alliance (UAPA) is a network of civil society organizations (CSO) working to reduce alcohol related harm in Uganda through advocacy for effective policies and making positive contributions working with Ministry of Health (Mental Health Division).

UAPA operates at the national level, while the member organizations at the district and community levels.

Who we are

Uganda Alcohol Policy Alliance (UAPA) is a national wide advocacy umbrella organization currently with 40 members working towards popularization of alcohol Control Policies and related activities in Uganda. A major anticipated outcome of UAPA is the enactment of the National Alcohol Control Policies and laws.

The primary target population of UAPA in all her efforts include but not limited to the policy makers, government ministries like Ministry of Health, Ministry of Trade and Industry, & Ministry of Education and Sports, and Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) and like-minded civil society organizations

To engage individuals and civil society organizations in policy formulation and regulation to prevent alcohol related harm in Uganda.

Strategy

  • Advocacy: To advocate for the enactment of evidence-based policies and legislations regulating the production and consumption of alcohol.
  • Networking: To strengthen the UAPA platform for dialogue and information sharing for various stakeholders to mitigate alcohol related harm.
  • Capacity Building: To build capacity of stakeholders in the promotion and delivery of policies and practices for prevention of alcohol related harm.
  • Sustainability of UAPA: To strengthen resource mobilization for the sustainability of UAPA.

Alliance Network

UAPA is part of the East Africa Alcohol Policy Alliance Network which is a membership based organization with a management body comprising of elected members from the different member organisations. Being a voluntary network organisation, UAPA relies on a constitution for governance of members.

Uganda Alcohol Policy Alliance (UAPA) is a network of civil society organizations (CSO) that started in 2011, to advocate for regulation to minimise alcohol related harm in Uganda. Under UAPA umbrella members have united against alcohol abuse /misuse in the Country.
