We, in partnership with Uganda National Health Consumers' Organisation (UNHCO) organised a breakfast meeting at Kampala Serena Hotel with like- minded civil society members to deliberate on the recommendation from the Parliament Committee on Health, to increase the tax imposed on alcohol and tobacco products by 20%.
The members present for this meeting came from institutions including Civil Society Budget Advocacy Group (CSBAG), Uganda Health Communications Alliance (UHCA), World Health Organisation, Members of Parliament, Makerere School of Public Health, Ministry of Health, members of the press among others.
A position paper from civil society was presented by Mr. Alor Steven, as well as submissions from the Dr. Hafisa Ssentongo from the Ministry of Health, the team from World Health Organisation country office as well as various Members of Parliament.
As Professor Mbona Nazarius from Makerere School of Public Health said, we welcome this proposed tax increment, as elaborated further in these two recorded news videos. Given ample time and observation, it will ease on the burden the country carries because of alcohol harm.
