On the 26th day of November 2021, the Uganda Alcohol Policy Alliance secretariat in conjunction with the Uganda Youth Development Link congregated at the World Health Organization offices in Kampala to launch the “WHO-SAFER MISSION on Alcohol in Uganda” project before the press.

The SAFER initiative is an alcohol control initiative that was started by the World Health Organisation and it’s international partners in 2018. Uganda is the very first country in the world to have this project running.

The “SAFER” phrase stands as an acronym for;

S - Strengthen restrictions on alcohol availability

A - Advance and enforce drink driving countermeasures

F - Facilitate access to screening, brief interventions and treatment

E - Enforce bans or comprehensive restrictions on alcohol advertising, sponsorship, and promotion

R - Raise prices on alcohol through excise taxes and pricing policies
