Uganda Alcohol Policy Conference 2022 (UAPC22) - Day 3.

Building Momentum For The Prevention Of Alcohol-Related Harm In Uganda: Walk the talk.

The last day of the conference was on the 25th of November 2022 and on this day, we all wore specially featured conference t-shirts, in a range of colours.

 

Plenary session 7 came in, built on “building momentum for alcohol policy advancement. Walking the talk”.

Ms. Nyamburah Kigerah from National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse Kenya shared with us on the “roles of a national regulatory body to prevent and reduce alcohol harm”.

Mr. Chris Wagoleire, the focal person of Jinja district came in next, sharing on the “challenges and opportunities facing the regulation of alcohol at local levels”.

We also got a feel of the draft national alcohol control bill.

 

We got into a panel discussion, that was moderated by Samson Kasumba from NBS TV.

It was about “prospects of alcohol legal reforms in Uganda”, with panelists including Ms. Nyambura Kigera, Colonel Dr. Victor Nekesa from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, Honourable Ojara Martin Mapenduzi of Gulu West, Mr. Chris Wagoleire.

 

Right after the break tea, we had a round-table dialogue on “faith-based institutions and the prevention of harmful use of alcohol”.

On this dialogue, there was representation from the Catholic faith, Church of Uganda faith as well as the inter-religious council of Uganda.

 

We also had a virtual presentation from Ms. Aadielah Maker-Diedericks from South African Alcohol Policy Alliance on “building momentum for a united approach to end alcohol harm in Africa”.

Ms. Kristina Sperkova, the President of Movendi International shared with us “changing social norms, building networks, coalitions and community action for alcohol control”.

 

A question-and-answer session followed in, right after these presentations and from which, we all broke off for lunch.

 

The Conference chairperson Dr. Kalema David presented the Conference Statement to us all, in Sunflower Hall.

We received the closing remarks of the Conference from Dr. Hafsa Lukwata, from the Ministry of Health.

 

Certificates and awards were presented to those of us who had the best abstracts, promising practice and organizing committee as well as the speakers of the Conference.

A group photo as well as a media briefing ensued after and finally, departure from the conference.
